School Strikers Launch National Day of Bushfire Solidarity on Nov 29

#ThisIsClimateChange Solidarity Sit-Downs across Australia

The School Strike for Climate Australia (SS4C) movement has announced that students around the country will walk out of school to join community members for a day of “Solidarity Sit-downs” outside politicians and fossil fuel company offices on November 29, in response to the bushfires tragically gripping the country.

Students will walk out of school and hold sit-downs in dozens of cities and towns around Australia, with thousands of people expected to participate. They will use the #ThisIsClimateChange hashtag.

The Sit-downs will provide a platform for those on the frontlines of the climate crisis to have their voices heard. Students will use the “Sit-downs” to fundraise for the Bushfire Appeal in conjunction with the Australian Red Cross.

School Strike leader and Nymboida local who lost her home to the bushfires, Shiann Broderick, said:

“Our Government’s inaction on the climate crisis has supercharged bushfires. People are hurting. Communities like ours are being devastated. Summer hasn’t even begun.

“But instead of taking real action on the climate crisis, our Government offers ‘thoughts, prayers’ - and more support for coal, oil and gas.

“Scott Morrison says students belong in school. But the impacts of the climate crisis are preventing many of us from attending.

“We hope that Australians across the country will join with us on November 29 to sit-down in solidarity with everyone on the frontline of the climate crisis, and demand real action now.”

Those sitting down will call on all politicians to increase support for Indigenous land management and the Rural Fire Service and take real climate action:

  1. No new coal, oil and gas projects including Adani's mega coal mine

  2. 100% renewable energy and exports by 2030

  3. Funding for a just transition and jobs for fossil fuel workers and communities

The #ThisIsClimateChange Hashtag is being launched by SS4C to recognise that the climate change has supercharged deadly bushfires.

Background: SS4C Australia is a decentralised, grassroots movement, led by school students, united in our commitment for climate action and justice.
