Poll reveals more than eight out of 10 Labor voters want ALP to #StopAdani
Nine out of 10 Labor voters support students’ right to demand climate action

Saturday 8 December: Ahead of mass, student-led marches today across Australia, new national ReachTel polling, conducted after last week’s Student Strike for Climate Action, reveals widespread support for the students demanding that the Morrison government act to address climate change, and for Bill Shorten to #StopAdani.
Today’s March for Our Future protests (see below) were called in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Cairns after Adani announced last week it would self-fund its mine, starting work before Christmas. Students have invited adults to join them, in solidarity, at the marches.
The Australian Youth Climate Coalition today released the results of a national ReachTel poll of 2,345 Australians, conducted on Tuesday 4 December (full results here). Key findings:
A clear majority of voters (62.7%) agree that school students have a right to demand the Morrison government act urgently to address dangerous climate change, including almost nine in ten (86.4%) Labor voters.
A majority (58.1%) agree the federal Labor Opposition should show leadership on climate change and oppose Adani’s coal mine, including 80.7% of Labor voters.
National Director of the Australian Youth Climate Coalition, Gemma Borgo-Caratti, said, “This new poll shows Australians support the students’ actions and that the Prime Minister’s attacks on the kids are mean-spirited and out-of-step with public opinion.
“The poll also puts Bill Shorten on notice that a clear majority of Australians, and the vast majority of Labor voters want him to act to stop the Adani mine. Labor voters want strong leadership on climate change, not a would-be Prime Minister who says the Adani coal mine would make no difference to carbon emissions.”
Jean Hinchliffe, 14 years old, who will speak at the march in Sydney today, said, “Young people will not stand by and let Adani dig its mine, or let politicians get away with waving through a project which will destroy our future.
“Climate change is breathing down our necks. We’re fired up and ready to do whatever it takes to stop Adani.
“Right around Australia, we are working on big plans for the school holidays and for 2019. We will keep pushing our governments to act on the biggest threat to all of us: climate change.”
